Somehow on the way to Denmark, they ended up in France; Guildenstern spent the time trying to explain why it was geographically, logically, and mathemetically unlikely (maths being the most difficult of three, but he was working on the graph) and Rosencrantz spent the time looking for sights and souvenirs, little things of interest. The first thing of interest was a very pleasant fellow Dane who, after some lively conversation and a bottle of wine, was glad to give directions. Guildenstern looked up from the graph and asked where he'd been all day.

Paper-cut -- blood blots out the words on the wings of a paper butterfly. "Try to be more careful," Guildenstern says, but it doesn't sound like scolding when the touch behind it is so gentle. He doesn't even mind that Guildenstern didn't get to see the butterfly, batting it impatiently, worriedly away. Anyway, "Sorry," Rosencrantz says.

...But by this time, I have figured out that stating so is a very bad way to throw away an opportunity. So from now on, I am going to STATE my interests.

I am interested in shiny things, little buttons that go click, crisp bills, ragged bills, currency in general, money, wait that was redundant, blindfolds, alarm clocks that don't go off, pigeons, the boy next door, looking for shapes in clouds, cats, smoke, lamps, college ruled paper, burn marks, forests, footprints, oil spills, zigzags, redemption, legends, wire mesh, choirs, cheap perfume, butterflies that crumble, cheesecake ... wait, this isn't working, is it. XD

Meme 2 - Rosencrantz/Guildenstern (surprise surprise) and candy. It's funny, I had that word in mind before I read any of the comments.

The theory, as Guildenstern sees it, was that rollercoasters are (in fact) no more than an expression of humanity's intrinsic (if silly) desire to see how much needless suffering it can survive. It makes one glad to be alive -- sick dizzy scared out of one's wits, but alive -- and it contributes to an over-all theory, an (if you will) thesis that these so-called "amusement parks" are created (in fiction) for masochism alone. All the evidence is there -- the hours spent on your feet, in the sun and in long lines, the screaming, the crowding, the cotton candy. Which "can hardly be healthy for you, can it? Just look at it."

"I don't know," Rosencrantz says. "I think it looks rather pleasant, don't you? It's all fluffy and sweet -- like a cloud, a little. If clouds are sweet. And it's pink!"

"Precisely. How many healthy foods do you know that are pink and fluffy? How many foods at all do you know that are pink and fluffy?"

"Just this one. And it's rather pleasant-looking, I think."

"And the most poisonous plants and animals come in bright, vivid colors -- I'm certain that pink is the worst of them. I know what will happen: it'll swell in your stomach, make you horribly ill, and you'll die. Again."

"I don't know about that. Give it a try."

"... I don't know about that."

"Give it a try, you'll like it."

He takes what's left of the fluffy-pink cloud; some of it sticks to his fingers. "This is not in any way admitting you're right. This is simply in the spirit of Roman self-sacrifice so that when you die, you at least won't have to die alone."

"Sweet, isn't it?"

"Roman self-sacrifice?"

"Well, no. But that, too."

When Rosencrantz presents him with another teddy bear (a ridiculous, doe-eyed thing Guildenstern embarassed to be seen with in public) he can't decide what the look and the giggle the girl at the ring-toss stand gives them is for, but he is certain that it is not and cannot come to good Yes, he thinks (but it's so soft), definitely a place for masochists.

... okay, so that was slightly longer than a line. that was slightly longer than a drabble. *fails* but it's just as bad as everyone else's, i'm sorry. XD XD XD ... icon coming soon.

did you know, at least three of your interests are prominently featured in a ros/guil fic i've been working on for over a month and have sort of finished but am still not ready to post if i ever do? fog, moths, and old graveyards -- not that i'm iconing any of those, but still. it's interesting, kinda! ... icons coming this afternoon, probably.

To Rosencrantz, the world is a first impression; everything is new, or else forgot and good as new; Guildenstern was never really very good at first impressions. Except with Rosencrantz -- Guildenstern is clever -- Guildenstern is funny -- Guildenstern is sweet in a Guildenstern sort of way -- Guildenstern is a bit silly sometimes (isn't he?) -- Guildenstern has a heartbeat that keeps perfect time, that Rosencrantz could listen to for days, or at least hours. Guildenstern is best in Rosencrantz's eyes, and seeing himself as Rosencrantz is like discovering a country.
